“The Path to Visual and Cultural Reparation in the Digital Age”

The HSA student research team—Vivian Finch ’26, Princess Alexander ’26, Amen Wakjira ’26, and Cadence Chen—presents its work on the Haitian Arts Digital Crossroads (HADC) project, an initiative dedicated to digitizing, cataloging, and increasing public awareness of Haitian art held in cultural institutions. For the past five years, HADC has advanced the idea of “digital reparations” by building a platform and community where restitution is both theorized and put into practice. Digital reparations offer a multifaceted approach to restoring cultural objects to their historical and social contexts while making them accessible to the communities to whom they belong.

Through the “Going Beyond Provenance” ™️methodology and the framework of digital reparations, Haitian artists and their works are more accurately documented and situated within academic discourse. This process contributes to the broader formation of a Haitian diasporic episteme, supporting both visual and cultural restitution.
